How to Use Flash Fill in Excel

Flash Fill in Excel is a tool that detects patterns in your data and fills in information to save you time. So for example in the columns below, there are first and last names entered in column A. As you start to type in the first names in column B, Excel will recognize the pattern and show you a preview. Hit enter to fill the cells.



Below you see the preview Excel provides once there is a pattern detected. Hit enter to fill column B


Alternatively, you can hit the Flash Fill button in the top right of the page once a pattern is detected. See the example below:
